    Giant Clump of Money

The other day I was buying groceries at Morton William’s — right across the street from Columbia — and the man in front of me dropped an enormous pile of cash as he was leaving the checkout lane.

    I picked it up.

“Sir, I believe you dropped this.”

You know your lab works too hard when…

The other day we were cleaning up the lab, and I found a yellow foam ball that closely resembled Nerf ammunition.

me: Hey, I found a Nerf ball!
    grad student 1: What’s Nerf?
grad student 2: I heard Google uses it.
    me: -_-;

Our lab has no windows. I wouldn’t be surprised if oxygen was pumped in as well.

    Industrial Light and Magic

ILM came to campus today to recruit for their research and development teams.

They presented an overview of the behind the scenes work that went into the Transformers movie. The combined work of the company was very impressive, but the narrow scope of the individual job descriptions was quite worrying.

Position Available: Virtual City Substrate Effects Engineer. Only the world’s best sidewalk crack designer need apply.

On the other hand, the artist/designer jobs seemed pretty cool. If only I had a 3D portfolio…

Afterwards, we enjoyed free lunch at an upscale Manhattan restaurant. I ordered my favorite fish. Mmmm.

Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo! today.

Even if the deal goes through, I don’t see them overtaking Google. The Microsoftization of popular Web 2.0 properties such as Flickr and Delicious might even cause a mass exodus to Google’s corresponding services, such as Picasaweb.

Update: Yahoo rejected the offer. A collective sigh of relief was felt across the Internet.

    About the header images

In case you’re wondering, I photographed the images you see in the header. If you visit various parts of the site, you may see the header change. It’s on a random rotation.

My camera of choice is the legendary FujiFinepix F30d. It has ISO performance like no other, allowing me to forgo the flash in all but the most meager lighting situations. It also has A/E priority, allowing the photographer to take wonderfully exposed and detailed photographs on a budget.

Although my Fuji has served me well, I’m looking into purchasing an SLR. I remember taking photos with my former lab’s assortment of Canon SLRs, and I’m beginning to miss the kinds of compositions I could achieve with those amazing cameras.
