    Free online security camera!

Screen shot 2009-11-27 at 12.59.48 PM

Looking for a web-based security camera that doesn’t require any special downloads or installation? Try out Vision on Tap: Spot Watcher.

In the demo, you can set up a motion detector using your webcam, select a region of interest (optional), and have a photo sent to your mobile phone or email. You can even use Twitter.

Here’s a video of me setting up an MMS alert on a cookie jar for my iPhone:

Vision on Tap Demo from Kevin Chiu on Vimeo.

In the future, you’ll be able to snap together simple custom programs that have capabilities beyond the demo.

Our research group is accepting new students this year! Please apply. We’re looking for people with computer vision / signal processing / optics backgrounds.

The Clowd, a phrase that seems to be a mashup by Seth Godin between “crowd” and “cloud,” represents the near-future widespread use of distributed data processing and natural media correlation techniques.

One of the natural media correlation techniques that I think has influenced Seth is Photo Tourism, otherwise known as Microsoft Photosynth, a project I was fortunate enough to be a part of.

I initially read the title as “The Clown”.

You know your lab works too hard when…

The other day we were cleaning up the lab, and I found a yellow foam ball that closely resembled Nerf ammunition.

me: Hey, I found a Nerf ball!
    grad student 1: What’s Nerf?
grad student 2: I heard Google uses it.
    me: -_-;

Our lab has no windows. I wouldn’t be surprised if oxygen was pumped in as well.

    Industrial Light and Magic

ILM came to campus today to recruit for their research and development teams.

They presented an overview of the behind the scenes work that went into the Transformers movie. The combined work of the company was very impressive, but the narrow scope of the individual job descriptions was quite worrying.

Position Available: Virtual City Substrate Effects Engineer. Only the world’s best sidewalk crack designer need apply.

On the other hand, the artist/designer jobs seemed pretty cool. If only I had a 3D portfolio…

Afterwards, we enjoyed free lunch at an upscale Manhattan restaurant. I ordered my favorite fish. Mmmm.

    Photochop

The other day I decided to create a web service (for fun).

The objective: To provide bloggers with an easy to use, online version of Photoshop.

    Spec:
The users should be able to watermark, blur, resize, or place a border around an image. The image and image processing commands should be submitted through a simple web form.

    Implementation:
I started with a framework I knew fairly well: Ruby on Rails. However, I ended up realizing it was total overkill for what I wanted to accomplish.

This realization led me to a simple lightweight framework called Ramaze. Ramaze made implementation almost trivial — the entire service was under 100 lines of code.
