Verizon P4P

without comments

Not so long ago, I raved about Verizon’s P4P initiative in which they propose to actually enhance the bandwidth of people who use p2p programs such as Bittorrent.

Well, at around the same time, I convinced our office to switch to Verizon. Yesterday, a tech came in to do the DSL activation. I tested some torrents just now, and within a few seconds of launching them, the line is already going at FULL SPEED! A torrent I started downloading when we had Time Warner is now more than 75 times faster!

Unfortunately, we didn’t have FIOS available in our area; so, we got 7Mb DSL instead. The unencumbered torrenting experience is still awesome. The download speed is saturated literally within seconds, and the responsiveness of other web applications is barely affected at all. Even though the bandwidth isn’t quite as good as we had with Time Warner, it’s still an overall improvement since the only bandwidth intensive thing we did in the apartment was Bittorrent.

Just to clarify things, P4P is still in the research stages and is not deployed anywhere yet. I’m just raving about having unshackled internet from a freedom-respecting company.

Verizon is officially awesome

with one comment

First there was FIOS, and now there’s enhanced P2P! It looks like Verizon is making up for the revolution it missed out on when it rejected Apple’s iPhone proposal.

Storm Worm has Intelligence?

without comments

Heise’s prediction has come true; the worm now attacks those who publish new information on the inner workings of the worm. Researchers are allegedly “running scared” from the worm, which seemingly has a sentient ability to detect and attack whoever threatens it.
